About the SSC

The Squadron Support Committee (SSC) represents the civilian side of the Air Cadet Program, which works alongside the Canadian Forces. It is a group of civilians who assist in raising funds for training and providing support and other assistance to the Commanding Officer.

The funds acquired by the SSC help provide training quarters for the squadron, cover operating and administrative expenses, provide awards and scholarships, and cover other costs not covered by the Department of National Defense. It operates under by-laws laid out by the Air Cadet League, including maintaining strict financial controls and holding elections for executive positions.

The members of the SSC may be parents, members of service clubs such as the Royal Canadian Legion, parents of cadets, or simply members of the community who want to play a role in ensuring the success of the squadron. All members of the SSC are screened under the Vulnerable Screening Sector (VSS) guidelines, as is the case with all volunteers who have an active role in the squadron.

62 SSC’s main function is to facilitate the operation of the Squadron. The Committee handles the finances for the Squadron and also runs various sub-committee initiatives such as the Christmas Banquet, various fundraising initiatives, Annual Inspection and the Annual Banquet. The SSC also runs this website on behalf of the Squadron.

Being a parent-run organization, the SSC depends on the support of parents willing to lend a few hours a month to help run the Squadron and assist in its growth. With over 90 cadets to support any and all help is appreciated. Meetings are usually held once a month on the first Monday of the month - see the Calendar for details. All parents are encouraged to attend and participate when they can.

In addition to becoming an Executive or Committee member here are some of the activities and sub-committees that could use your assistance

  • Welcome Back BBQ
    • Held on the first Friday night after Labour Day in September, the Squadron BBQ is an opportunity for the SSC to welcome the staff and parents to another training year. The SSC provides the hamburgers!
  • Tagging
    • Twice a year the SSC runs a “Tag Day” weekend. These are a mandatory activity for the cadets and serves as our primary fundraiser
  • LotteryTickets
    • The Air Cadet League sponsors a lottery raffle every Spring for valuable cash prizes and a new car. The funds raised from this sweepstakes go directly towards the costs of operating the 60+ aircraft fleet used for cadet glider training. All cadet squadrons participate in ticket sales and as incentive they receive back a portion of the funds they raise
  • Canteen
  • ChristmasBanquet
  • Annual Inspection
  • AnnualBanquet
  • Driving and/or supervising various
    • Cadet events
Tagging and lottery ticket sales only covers the basic squadron operations. All other cadet activities and training opportunities are funded by the squadron itself - more specifically by the parent-run SSC.

We are looking to start a new fundraising sub-committee which will be tasked with finding new and creative ways of approaching local government, businesses and service groups for financial assistance. Parents are encouraged to meet with SSC members and bring to their attention any opportunities that they may know about in their workplace.

      Many hands make light work!
